The "Holy Spirit" church in Nuremberg, in the New Hospital. In 1339, Nuremberg merchant Konrad Gross founded the Heilig-Geist-Spital, medieval Germany's largest charitable facility for the aged, sick and needy. Its church, the Heilig-Geist-Kirche, served as the repository of the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire for more than 300 years. It was destroyed in World War II, and unlike the other buildings of the complex, it was not rebuilt.
