Pieter Janssens Elinga painted mostly quiet interior scenes in a style reminiscent of Pieter de Hooch: homely, bourgoise parlors with gentle women and men engrossed in reading, speaking or, as in this case, playing music. The Elinga/de Hooch manner of painting paid much attention to architectural detail, perspective and light: a checked floor emphasized the depth in the painting; a window supplied playing sunrays contrasting with the mellow light of the room. The painting is signed PJE (as monogram).

- Artist info: Pieter Janssens Elinga was the son of the artist Gijsbrecht Janssens - he was probably also his son´s teacher – active in Bruges. The eldest archive record to mention Pieter Janssens Elinga is an inventory list stated after his first wife´s death in 1653 in Rotterdam. It reveals that the family lived under poor circumstances and that the four young and motherless children were in danger of being taken charge of by the authorities. Four years later he moved to Amsterdam where he is mentioned as a musician and it is not until the beginning of 1660 that he is mentioned as an artist. He remarried Jurina Bos and had four more children. The family lived at Breestraat in Amsterdam where also Rembrandt had lived until 1658.
