Description: Under Degas’ influence, Jean-Louis Forain regularly attended the ballet at the Paris Opera House, not so much to study feminine anatomy in movement, but more to observe the world of opera-goers, who formed a representative slice of contemporary Parisian society. Intermission. On Stage reveals Forain’s off-stage interests, as well as his penchant for satire and moralizing, as the almost caricatured older male patron fixes his gaze on the bared chest of the ballerina.
