Neil Davis (1934–1985) was one of Australia’s most respected combat cameramen, best remembered for his coverage of the conflict in Indo-China. In 1964 Davis made his first trip to Vietnam and Laos to report on the war, working as a cameraman and correspondent for Visnews, the UK-based international news agency. In 1973 he left Visnews to become a freelance cameraman and correspondent.
Throughout his time in Vietnam Davis depicted the war from the perspective of the South Vietnamese, often travelling with troops of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam.
Ever motivated by a desire to capture the best possible footage, Davis often took great risks. In 1975 he famously filmed a North Vietnamese T-54 tank breaking through the gates of Saigon’s Independence Palace– which became a symbol of the communist triumph in Vietnam.
After the Vietnam War, Davis went on to cover stories in Cambodia, Angola, Beirut, Uganda and Sudan. In 1985 he was killed by “a spray of shrapnel”, in the words of his biographer, Tim Bowden, while filming a coup in Bangkok.
