Mr. Mbaso was sentenced to 18 years in prison for involvement in the military struggle of the ANC, and imprisoned from 1984-1991.
While imprisoned on Robben Island he attended political discussion, classes, sports activities. Over time there was increased interaction with other inmates, comrades and leaders which led to the grooming of future ANC leaders.
"This is where the leaders were born. And you must know that the first democratically elected president came from this prison...Most importantly, the island symbolizes the survival of the human spirit against all odds."
