In August 1944, Intrepid crew members gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of Intrepid’s commissioning. The year had been eventful and difficult. The ship entered the Pacific War and received its first battle scars. The crew lost 30 shipmates to combat or accidents.
Intrepid’s bakers unveiled an elaborate creation for the first anniversary: a two-tiered sheet cake with an aircraft carrier perched on top. The finished cake weighed over 728 pounds (330 kg) and required 90 dozen eggs.
