Cox never went to Scotland. He often used drawings of the region by his son for his Scottish landscapes, but this watercolour may have been informed by the engravings of Thomas Barber (active 1818 - 1846). A series of Barber's engravings were published as illustrations in John Preston Neale's (1780 - 1847) 'Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland', in 1823. 'Inverary Castle' is similar in style to them.
