British travel writer Isabella Bird was a world adventurer and the first woman elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Fascinated by her travels in Colorado, Isabella wrote A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains in 1873. The account vividly portrayed her journey up Longs Peak, her two-room cabin home in Estes Park and the 3,000-mile horseback trip she took across the Front Range. She authored a number of volumes describing her travels to Hawaii, Japan, China, and worlds beyond.

“Everything suggests a beyond.”
— Isabella Bird, A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains
