Here the red ground is decorated with a complex floral design with “bands of clouds” and a curvilinear linking pattern. The “Herati” motif is used to decorate the main border with its green ground.
The central part of the carpet has four large flowers turned towards the four corners. It is set slightly off centre towards the border because a large part of the central field is missing. The carpet actually is made up of some fragments and it has numerous tears in the direction of the weft.
This type of carpets is attributed to both Isfahan, in Central Persia, and Herat, in Eastern Persia. However, in this case, Isfahan seems the most plausible attribution.
