Isis Temple oil lamp selection

High-empire Roman oil lamps (2nd century AD.) discovered in the room P-3 (crypt) of the Temple of Isis, in the excavations carried out by the French Institution of Hispanic studies Casa de Velázquez in 1987. The first lucerne, the type Deneauve VD (right), has a religious iconography related to an initiation ritual, perhaps dedicated to the goddess Isis. Also we can see an altar with fire and on both sides snakes coiled on the tree trunk, symbol of fertility and regeneration. The second of them, a Dressel 20 (center), shows the god Helios with a crown of seven rays. Finally the lucerne type Deneauve VIIA (left) has an iconography with palm leaves, symbol of victory, fertility and resurrection.
