"Swanevelt spent most of his life in Rome and Paris, sharing a house with Claude in Rome from 1627-29. He and Claude developed along similar lines, one influencing the other, and their works are not always easy to separate. In 1644 he became Painter to the King of France.

Further Information: " Swanevelt's Italian Landscape with Bridge and DPG136, also depicted on this wall, are the same size and show a morning and an evening landscape in Italy. This suggests that they form a pair. Together, they offer a study in contrasts: An Italian Landscape (DPG136) has a restrained colour scheme, while this painting is warmer, the whole scene bathed in a golden light. In particular, the detailed depiction of the plants and leaves in Italian Landscape with a Bridge are much more decorative than similar elements in DPG136. "
