"Swanevelt spent most of his life in Rome and Paris, sharing a house with Claude in Rome from 1627-29. He and Claude developed along similar lines, one influencing the other, and their works are not always easy to separate. In 1644 he became Painter to the King of France.

  • Further Information: " Swanevelt's Italian Landscape with Bridge and DPG136, also depicted on this wall, are the same size and show a morning and an evening landscape in Italy. This suggests that they form a pair. Together, they offer a study in contrasts: An Italian Landscape (DPG136) has a restrained colour scheme, while this painting is warmer, the whole scene bathed in a golden light. In particular, the detailed depiction of the plants and leaves in Italian Landscape with a Bridge are much more decorative than similar elements in DPG136. "
