After a four-year stay in Italy, the Amsterdam painter Jan Baptist Weenix settled in Utrecht, where he became an apprentice of Abraham Bloemaert. The warm tone of the southern sunlight, the bright colours and the Roman building in this painting are inspired by his Italian adventure. While he painted portraits, still lifes, animal pieces and interiors, he was most appreciated for his Italianate landscapes and his imagined Mediterranean harbour views.
