Ithunga / Milk pail

A Zulu milk pail with tribal carvings as the banner of the chief of the area and clan which the makers comes from. It is used for milking cows by the men of the homestead. The milk is immediately poured out into a calabash and the women of the homestead can now work with it as they are not allowed to touch the milk pail, since the milk pail, and generally wood carving, is a male tactivity. The pail is then mounted upside down on pole in the cattle kraal to drip and dry. It never enters the house.
