Izinkezo / Spoons

Phansi Museum

Phansi Museum
Berea, South Africa

Zulu spoons were often carved out of wood and used with great care. The stems were usually personalized with relief carving, telephone wire or burnt. The father of the bride would present aher daughter with a set of spoons in exchange for a goat or equally valuable gift with her father-in-law. Only then could she prepare, eat and drink from her household's communal food source.
