View of the downriver side of Esplanade Avenue looking toward the lake from near the corner of Royal Street. At 639 Esplanade is J.B. Soubiran Grocery Store advertising leeches, the "only general depot of leeches." In the distance are buildings in the 700 block of Esplanade Avenue. Several buildings have ironwork balconies and galleries. Wooden fences and streetlights are visible, and the street is unpaved and sycamore trees line the neutral ground.
