On the shelves inside a jaali, newspaper or plastic sheet is spread to prevent the marks of food or oil spills on the shelves. The top surface of a jaali is generally used to store kitchen items. However, in this example, it was used as an offering shelf, where lamps and incense sticks were kept, for the shrine located above the jaali.
