Once the sale of luxury goods was no longer restricted by guilds in the 19th century, increasing numbers of entrepreneurs began selling stylish luxury products. These not only included attractive ribbons, trimmings, and lace, but also appliqué and beading work, all of which were increasingly determining the appearance of garments and dresses. These products saw a huge rise in popularity because, thanks to the new embroidery, ribbon, and lace-making machines, they could now be industrially produced.
