A proof from a copper plate engraved by Robert Strange for eight Jacobite banknotes. Four have printed values (1d, 2d, 3d, 6d), while four are left blank. Each banknote features the monogram 'C.P.' and a rococo cartouche with a thistle. The cartouche is surmounted by the Prince of Wales Feathers, and rests on a ledge. Behind the ledge is a trophy of arms and flags.
The printing plate was engraved by Robert Strange for Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie). The notes were never issued, because the plate was delivered shortly before his defeat at Culloden. The plate was lost until the c.1835, when it was found at the west end of Loch Laggan.
On 10 July 1928 a limited edition of 57 prints were taken from the printing plate by Sir David Young Cameron, 50 of which were sold for the benefit of the West Highland Museum.
The printing plate, from which this print was made, is currently held by the West Highland Museum in Fort William.
