King Otto IV of Germany donated the Königshof yard outside the city walls, together with its Jakobskapelle chapel, to the order of the Teutonic Knights in 1209. This became one of the combined military and religious order’s most significant bases. After the Reformation, now enclosed inside the city walls, it remained a Catholic extra-territorial enclave within Nuremberg until the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved in 1806.
