Provenance: Commissioned by Alleyn's College, 1724; a payment to Ellys of £26.5.0 appears in the College accounts for the week ending 27 November 1724, but an old label verso, reading 'This for the Right Honourable my Lady Pitsligo', confirms that Allen bequeathed it to his sister, Elizabeth, Lady Pitsligo (d. 1759), a benefactress of the College. James Allen's Will directed that all his pictures 'except that drawn by Mr Ellis which I leave to my sister Pitsligo' were left to the College (Wren & Hackett, at note 1, p.76); College Board Room 1892; James Allen's Girl School.
Inscriptions: Signed lower right edge: 'J. Ellys p.'; dated lower centre right: 'JALLEN [monogram]/ 42/1724'; the scroll inscribed: 'Sussex &/Wigorn / Rotulus Jacobi Allen'.
