This woodcutting was made by Harry Kernoff, an Irish artist. It represents James Connolly, an Irish nationalist who, with Patrick Pearse, led the Easter Rising of 1916. Connolly was also one of the commanders of the Irish Citizen Army alongside White and Larkin. Captured after the surrender of the rebels after a week of fighting, a badly injured Connolly was executed by a British Army firing squad on the 12th May 1916. Due to his injuries he couldn't stand facing his firing squad and so he was tied to a chair before being shot.
