Further Information: James Stuart (1633-1701), Duke of York; later King James II. A vigorous study, loosely resembling in pose and exactly in dess Lely's seated three-quarter length of the Duke now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (901), and his double portrait showing the Duke with his first wife in the National Portrait Gallery (5077). The fall and curls of the hair agree with another three-quarter length by Lely in the Royal Collection, showing the Duke in armour. These patterns may be dated between late 1660, when the Duke married, and 1664 when the Duke 'first put on a periwigg' and Greenhill, who was in Lely's studio c. 1663-65, may have been working from a Lely original, although Jeffree proposed it was painted with clumsy brushwork.
