The Jamoa jacket and Tarma dress were made from hand-woven matka silk with cotton appliqué. Matka silk is hand-loomed yarn, similar to linen but with the richness of silk. It is made from waste raw silk that has been wound around an earthenware pot, or matka. Appliqué is a skilful and time-consuming process where two fabrics are stretched together on a frame, in this instance with the cotton piece on top. The pattern is stitched through both layers with a tiny but strong zig zag stitch. The cotton is then clipped away to reveal the pattern and the fabric below. Extreme care must be taken not to cut through the stitching or the fabric beneath.
