Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

Jan van Leiden, the self-appointed king of the Anabaptist realm of Münster, was portrayed by Aldegrever, even after his defeat, in a ruler’s garb: “This was my appearance, this is my jewelry, when I carried the scepter, I the king of the Anabaptists, though only for a brief time. God’s power is my strength.” After van Leiden was executed, his corpse was suspended from the tower of the Lambertikirche (Saint Lambert church) in Münster
