Economist Janet Yellen (born 1946) is the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve in its 100-year history. The chair of the nation’s central bank, known as the Fed, plays a key role in guiding the U.S. economy.
Yellen taught at UC Berkeley before joining the Fed’s board of governors in 1994. After a stint leading the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, she returned to Washington in 2010 as Fed vice chair and helped guide the nation out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
During Yellen’s tenure as Fed chair from 2014-2018, the nation’s unemployment rate fell while stock markets rose, both by record numbers.
