In the Literary Woodland there is one of the hardiest close relatives of the Citrus, the Japanese bitter orange (Poncirus trifoliata). This plant has some serious defences in the form of long, sharp thorns and produces small sour orange fruits that are generally inedible, but can be made into marmalade.
