This signed Japanese flag reportedly dates from the formal surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. The signature of General Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander for the Allied powers, is in the center of the red circle along with the words “Tokyo – 1945.” Numerous other signatures represent members of the press who were covering the surrender, such as Robert Trumbull of the New York Times. Other names represent members of the U.S. military.
