Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

The Japanese spider crab is the largest living arthropod and, as revealed by the shape of its shell and claws, is related to the European spider crab. The length of the legs is different between sexes and attains its maximum in males: in the largest specimens, weighting about 20 kg, the claws span can reach almost four meters. It lives in deep waters, at a depth between 50 and 300 meters, and is a valuable fisheries target.
