Japanese White-eyes and Plum Blossoms

Sakakibara Shiho1939

Adachi Museum of Art
Yasugi, Shimane, Japan

Eight White-Eye birds are resting their wings on the branches of a snow covered plum tree. The white budding plum flowers and the soft feathers of the birds show us that spring is just around the corner. This painting seems to reflect the words Shiho wrote in his book “About Flower and Bird Paintings” in 1926: “Flowers and birds are our eternal mind that is directly given by nature. We are eternal beauty close to ourselves, endless power of life flowing inside ourselves, and absolute love.”
