The firewood ashes that fell and accumulate on top of the vessel during kiln firing become a vitrified, bright-green glaze and flow downward over the bright deep-red body of the vessel. Tamba Ware of the Muromachi period typically used relatively fine clay with brighter color. The thick rim and the horizontally pulled out opening were modelled after Bizen Ware jars that used to be widely distributed in Japan during the latter half of the Muromachi period.
