Jar with Slip-Brushed Design

HWANG Chong-nye (1927- ) is an artist whose use of color glazes has been esteemed to be most Korean. Hwang’s strong preference for buncheong ware whose production was very active in the early Joseon dynasty is evidenced by her words describing the charm of Korean pottery, “crude and freewheeling, but feels like unobtrusively good flavored.” The artist produced a large number of dark-colored works during her early career and later started to attempt various kinds of color glazes such as crimson, dark bluish-green, brown, green and so on. Jar with Slip-Brushed Design (1995) shows a dynamic and vigorous use of the technique called “gyuiyal (paste brush)”. It requires an exceptional skill with brushwork to express a design at a high speed since the surface dries quite quickly.
