Inspired by the French Revolution, people of color on the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic) successfully revolted against their French and Spanish colonizers; Haiti became an independent republic in 1804. Boyer was a soldier, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution, and president of Haiti from 1818 to 1843.
