This statue of Jero Gede is one of a pair, called Barong Landung. Jero Gede is the male part shown with a black face, while his female counterpart, called Jero Luh, has a white face and almond shaped eyes. The Barong Landung are about three meters high. In the Balinese language, landung means tall.The Barong Landung dance is performed on certain occasions, such as when there is an epidemic in a village. During the Galungan festival, Barong Landung are put on display at the local temple, the Pura. After the festivities, the Barong Landung are, in a procession, brought out of the Pura, accompanied by a group of people who are chanting and dancing. At each village they pass, the Barong Landung will stop at the Balai Banjarto, and briefly perform a little sketch, intended to educate and entertain the audience, with stories filled with wisdom and humor.
