When Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley threatened to shut down one of the first Black Expos, Dr. Hermene Hartman denied Daley, “I jumped in front of everybody at the Amphitheater. I said, ‘We’re Black, and we’re proud…. We are permission…God gave us permission.’”
