Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in light shades of ochre, gray and white and earthy tones, green, black and red. Smooth texture in the background, marked and thick brushstrokes in the soldier's chest. Figures represented with significant and deliberated deformed expressions. It depicts the second fall of Jesus under the weight of the cross. In the foreground, in the center, Jesus fell on his knees, in profile to right, bent with the cross resting over his left shoulder. Disfigured, his face dripping drops of blood. On the left, behind the cross, a man figure facing forward, holding the vertical crossbeam. On the right, a kneeling female figure in profile to the left with her arms raised in front of Jesus. In the background, in the center, a half-lengh soldier half-length foraward facing, raising a whip with long strips on the right hand. Ground in earthyy tones and light background with geometric shapes, and strong contrast of light and dark shades can noticed, which accentuate the drama of the scene. .
