Such brooches were worn by Germanic men, women, and children; they held their garments together around the shoulders. They were very much subject to changes in fashion and, thus, their look changed quickly. The appearance of very similar pieces along the lower Elbe and in England clearly indicates the route of the Saxon emigrants, as in the case of the equal armed brooches.
