There were serious fights on the Carpathian line, in the summer and autumn of 1915 with a lot of wounded soldiers. Women, including many Jewish women, proved their compassion and participated as voluntary nurses. Bilka, whose first name we know as it was written on the back of the amateur pictures, worked at the military hospital in Cluj-Napoca in the summer of 1915, where as an educated woman she not only assisted in the health care of soldiers but also in reading the letters the soldiers received from home.
