Jewish refugee from eastern Poland registering for employment with a service managed by the local Jewish community, funded in part by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”). In 1946 alone, the Joint, in cooperation with the Central Committee, helped to set up 121 cooperatives to enable small groups of tailors, electricians, and shoemakers to earn their living.
