Jiang Biwei Reading

This painting depicts Jiang Biwei reading leisurely in bed at home. Xu produced numerous oil paintings and sketches during his stay in France and many of them were of Jiang Biwei.There were probably 2 reasons for this. First, Xu and Jiang were madly in love at the time. Second, Xu found himself in financial difficulties during his stay and hiring models was too costly, so he created many of his works featuring Jiang as his muse.
