The Black Hills area of South Dakota holds some of the most dramatic scenery in the United States. In Custer State Park, visitors can chose from three different scenic drives. The Needles highway takes tourists past unique granite formations that pierce the sky like needles. Some of these are known as "The Chessmen." This same image has been used for many Custer State Park postcards.
