The Wallis family was a leading manufacturer of maps and dissected puzzles in London during the first half of the 19th century. The father John Wallis began in 1775 and a son Edward took over in 1818 at his father's death. The firm's puzzles ranged from biblical subjects to humorous scenes, and naturally maps. Another son, John Junior, also collaborated in the manufacture of puzzles. The puzzle "Scripture, Natural History & Zoology" has one replacement piece, lovingly cut from mahogany by a previous owner, and documented with a note pasted inside the box.
