Jin-silk Robe with Confronted Horses in Petalled Floral Roundels

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This robe made of weft-faced silk twill has a standing collar, half sleeves and two lower side slits. The main ornament is a petalled floral medallion, in which there are two confronted horses standing on a cone-shaped platform, each with a lowering head, a flowing-ribbon-decorated neck and a front hoof in the air. Composed of multiple petal-like curly leaves, with the outermost ones in the shape of knifes, such platforms are also known as “palm platform” due to their similarity to palm trees. The area outside the medallion is adorned with two beasts rushing towards each other, on which small floral motifs can be identified.
