A Jina, or tirthankara, is a holy figure and teacher in the Jain religion. Jainism, one of the three great religions, along with Buddhism and Hinduism, to originate in India, stresses peace, purity and the conquest of desire. Jain means "liberator" (from earthly desires). The jina, seated cross-legged in meditation, is beautiful in his austerity. He is naked, as the digambara, or "sky-clad" Jains wanted no barrier between humans and perfection. Only the srivatsa, or holy mark, ornaments his bare chest.
