Alfred Ko studied photography in the Banff School of Fine Arts, University of Alberta, Canada where he was awarded Senior Diploma in 1977. He founded the Fotocine School of Photography and the Photo Centre in the 1980s, and took up teaching posts at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, First Institute of Art and Design as well as Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Arts over the years. Ko is also the founding member of the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers. The Claustrophobia series depicts the absurd cycle of material wealth and capitalistic consumerism that is so avidly followed by the modern urbanite. In this extremely capitalism-oriented age, spending has far exceeded essential needs. It is a never-ending cycle of seeking material pleasure, then spending more money and then for consumption at last. So an absurd circle of spending, desire and spending evolves, resulting in an endless consumption of the earth's resources, as well as our own lives.
