This portrait of Bach was based on a lithograph executed in Leipzig by Friedrich Gustav Schlick in 1840. It is surrounded by pictures of St Thomas’s Church and the tower of Pleissenburg Castle, which housed an observatory. The lower half shows St Thomas’s Church and the monument to Bach erected in 1843. The lithograph was reprinted shortly afterwards at Payne’s English Art Institute in Leipzig.
