This picture was created after a print produced by French painter and lithographer Antoine Maurin in around 1822. The similarity to the oldest graphic likeness of Bach by Samuel Gottlob Kütner is striking. The lithograph was used by Trautwein, a publishing company in Berlin, for the frontispiece of the first edition of the St John Passion.
