The stone city walls around the town are defensive like the armour on a knight. Yet as the knight’s armour will not protect it against modern weapons, nor does the stone wall keep the city safe anymore and thus, most of the old city gates have been demolished. Currently two gate towers remain, the one called the Pikk Jalg / Long Leg gate can be seen on this picture from 1835. The medieval building on the right has been rebuilt and cars have overtaken the horse-drawn carriages.
