Lost. John Allen (1771-1843): historian; trained as a surgeon in Edinburgh; accompanied Lord Holland to Spain, 1802-5 and 1808; became an inmate of Holland House, where he managed to remain whilst Warden of Dulwich College 1811-20 and Master from 1820. DPG447 is a copy of Landseer's original which was commissioned by the 1st Lord Holland as a birthday present for his wife in 1836 and presented by their son's widow to the National Portrait Gallery in 1873.
