John Barrymore was a well-known stage actor and movie star. He was born into the Drew and Barrymore theatrical families, and began acting in 1900. His portrayal of Hamlet in 1922 led to him being called “the greatest living American tragedian.” Barrymore began taking movie roles in 1913, and in starred in several films, such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Sherlock Holmes (1922), Grand Hotel (1932), Twentieth Century (1934) and Midnight (1939).
