John Brademas

US Congressman. Born Stephen John Brademas Jr., he served in the United States House of Representatives from the 3rd District of Indiana from January 3, 1959 to January 3, 1981. After graduating from high school, he served two years in the United States Navy before going to college at Harvard University. He later received a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University in England. He entered the political field by working on the staff of several members of Congress. He also worked as an assistant professor at St. Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana. He was unsuccessful in his first two tries for election to Congress (1954, 1956), but in 1958 he was elected to the House of Representatives as a Democrat. During his tenure in Congress, he worked on education and arts issues and served as the House Majority Whip from 1977 to 1981. He was defeated for reelection in 1980 by Republican John P. Hiler. After leaving Congress, he served as president of New York University from 1981 to 1992. After leaving New York University, he served the Clinton Administration in several positions.
